MRS. Q. E. ROUTON CALLED IN DEATH
SPLENDID WOMAN IS BURIED IN BEVILL CEMETERY
FRIDAY; GREATLY ADMIRED.
Bringing to a close a life exemplary in that of noble Christian womanhood, the death of Mrs. Laura Bowden Routon, 65, wife of Mr. Quincy E. Routon of near Routon, occurred at local hospital Thursday night at eleven o’clock. Last rites from the family home Friday afternoon were attended by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives. Burial was a Bevill Cemetery, under a wealth of floral tributes that gave mute evidence of the beauty and sweetness of Mrs. Routon’s character.
The service was in charge of Rev. D. T. Spaulding.
The husband, a prominent Henry County farmer and citizen, survives, also one daughter and four sons, all of whom were at their mother’s bedside at her death. They are: Miss Vera Routon, who teaches at Union University, Jackson; Ed S. of Pittsburgh, Pa., an official of the American Fruit Growers Express; Fuqua J. of Little Rivers, Florida, where he is secretary of the Chamber of Commerce; Ralph of Bells, Tenn., a state highway engineer, and Elbert, who lives at the family
home here. One brother, E. C. Bowden of Memphis, also survives.
Mrs. Routon has been in bad health for two years suffering from arthritis, but has only been seriously ill for two weeks. Uraemic poison set up and she was brought from home to a local hospital for treatment, but grew gradually worse and early last week her children were summoned to her bedside.
Born in this county March 18, 1864, Mrs. Routon spent her life here and was generally loved and admired. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bowden. Her church membership was Cumberland Presbyterian. Until April 19, 1888, when she married Mr. Routon, she was a teacher for a number of years in the county schools. Well ducated and possessing an unusual intelligent mind that fitted her for leadership, she participated in various church, educational, and civic activities that were prominent. She was an able and an active Sunday School worker, was at one time president of the county W.C.T.U.
A distinct honor to her literary attainments was her being asked by state historian, John Trottwood Moore, to prepare data on Henry County military history for the state archives. This service she most capably rendered.
Mrs. Routon was queenly in bearing – a gracious, kindly woman – high minded, modest, gentle, whose every thought and deed were those of a splendid lady. She is the ideal of her family and gave the strength of her mind and body to their welfare.
